Building conversational AI agents today is radically different from the past, largely due to the paradigm shift towards LLM-based conversational AI. This evolution introduces a unique set of challenges in creating production-ready AI voice agents that are both reliable and user-friendly. Previous tools allowed for the creation of extremely detailed but rigid conversational flows. It would take months to design the dialogs so that the virtual agent would have enough knowledge to handle situations in a way that is user-friendly and not overly stiff. With LLMs, the challenge is almost the opposite, as they can be overly 'creative' with the conversation. Our focus is on ensuring that LLMs are reliable, properly guardrailed, and can properly execute actions while maintaining their intelligence and creativity. Other crucial aspects with LLM-based voice agents include achieving human-level latency (<500ms), mastering turn-taking, knowing when to speak and when to listen, and handling interruptions to deliver a sentient-like experience.
Contrary to some opinions, building a robust AI voice agent isn't a quick, simple process—it involves more than just inputting a prompt template into GPT for a cool demo. Developing a production-ready agent that can handle edge cases, execute actions reliably, and allow for iterative improvements through monitoring and A/B testing requires significant effort. However, at Retell AI, we are committed to simplifying this process as much as possible, from building and testing to deploying and monitoring agents.
